A Fantastical Method of Oil Painting

New York based, Chinese American artist, Stone Chun Shi, uses the term “Stone Oil Cube” to describe his innovative method of oil painting. He uses premixed oil colors to create thousands of three-dimensional cubes that compose his paintings. Chinese and US currency, and pop culture icons, such as Marilyn Monroe, Buddha, Peking opera masks, the Cross, and Emojis, are all topics of Stone’s works. Stone’s paintings, with their sculpted brushstrokes and exuberant color patterns, gives the impression of abstract art from up close, and photo-realistic figurative art from a distance. Interested in creating a balance between pop art and fine art, Stone conveys a sense of complexity in his artworks.
